Two ways to file
Through the consulate
You apply for the visa at the Spanish consulate that covers your place of residence. Each consulate publishes its own document list and appointment process.
Requirements
Requirements as published in the law and by the Spanish consulates. The consulate or office you apply to has the final say.
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Admission | An acceptance letter from the Spanish educational institution and proof of the enrolment payment at an authorised centre. |
| Funds | 100% of IPREM, which is €600 per month in 2026. Add 75% of IPREM for the first family member and 50% for each further one. Your consulate says how many months it counts. |
| Health insurance | Public or private insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, with no deductible, copayment, waiting period or coverage limit. The Los Angeles consulate asks for cover of at least €30,000. |
| Medical certificate | Issued at most 90 days before filing. It states that you have no disease that could seriously affect public health (International Health Regulations 2005). |
| Criminal record | For stays over 180 days: a certificate from the countries where you lived, with an apostille, issued within the last 6 months. |
Government fees
- Visa fee at the consulate: €90 for a national long-stay visa (type D). It is paid in euros or in the local currency.
- TIE (Modelo 790, code 012): €16.08 for the first issue.
Amounts as published on 2026-11-03. The law updates them every year with the budget laws, and each consulate may state the visa fee in local currency. Your consultant confirms the exact figures in your quote.

Higher education and other training activities, internships that do not qualify for an internship visa, and volunteer services in areas of general or public interest.
